In Detail

Calico markings are some of the most popular, since there are so many interesting color combinations you can get with them.

I will show you all of the different markings and patches, but obviously not all of the combinations!

There are four basic color schemes a calico can have. Directly below each picture is the same cat showing the opposite side. The first two catz are basically the same colors, but notice that their faces are mirror images of each other. The third cat has black on the head/chest instead of orange, with some other mixed up colors. The last cat has white on the head/chest.

Each of these four varieties comes with its own mandatory patches. The first variety only has one mandatory patch: a white one on the butt. The second variety had the white butt patch plus 5 patches on the tail. The third and fourth varieties have an orange butt patch and 5 tail patches.

Now that we've got the basic color schemes out of the way, I will show you all of the possible patches. You may not find this part interesting, since most people find the calico patches to be annoying anyway, but I wanted to keep track so that I could see what happens in the next generation with them.

These patches are unrelated, meaning they are chosen independently:

right hip: 2/3 chance for white patch, 1/3 chance for no patch here
left hip: 2/3 chance for orange patch, 1/3 chance for no patch here

right knee: 2/3 chance for black patch, 1/3 chance for no patch here
left knee: 2/3 chance for tan patch, 1/3 chance for no patch here

right shoulder: 2/3 chance for white and black patches, 1/3 chance for no patches here
left shoulder: 3/4 chance for white and black patches, 1/3 chance for no patches here

right elbow: 2/3 chance for orange patch, 1/3 chance for no patches here
left elbow: 2/3 chance for white patch, 1/3 chance for no patches here

right wrist: 3/4 chance for the white/orange patches and 1/4 chance for no patches here

2/3 chance for an orange and black patch on the left foot, 1/3 chance for no patch here

Unlike the previous patches, these patches are related to each other:

There is a 2/3 chance of getting the black right ankle patch, and a 1/3 chance of getting the black right foot patch. There is no option for getting neither of these patches, so count this as a mandatory patch for AC calis.

These patches are also related. There is a 1/3 chance of the white patch, a 1/3 chance of the orange patch, and a 1/3 chance for no patches here.

Also note that there is a higher chance to have female calicos than male calicos. 3/4 catz out of the AC will be female, and only 1/4 will be male. I guess the programmers wanted to make it more realistic, since in real life calicos are always female. But they had to throw some males in there too so you can have purebred calicos!

The minimum number a patches an AC calico can have is 3 (There is only a .0002% chance of this happening!). The maximum is 23 patches (There is only a 1.6% chance of this happening). [note: I'm just counting what the visible patches are, not the number of paintballs. Some patches are made up of a number of paintballs.]

Ok, now I want to go back to the original picture of the 4 base color varieties and point out some patterns.

Now, not only are the colors swapped in these varieties, the patterns of colors are different too.

Here I've painted them to make the patterns more clear. I used high generation calico mixies so the patches weren't distracting. Notice how the paint can paints each variety. The body parts are grouped differently. This is important if you are trying to breed for different patterns, like gypsies.

Here I painted just the "gypsy" group of markings. To breed this type of cat, all groupings have to be colored one color, except for this group which is different. Notice that each variety produces a different kind of marking. One doesn't have an ear marking and one has no tail marking.

Another type of cat these groups are important for breeding is the masked calico. This means that the cheeks and jowls are all one color, and are different from the color of the head. The first three types of groupings can give you masked calicos, but the last one cannot!

There's not too much interesting about this group, but here it is.

Nothing really interesting about this one either, but here it is just in case!

Personality

Calicos are really playful and have fun personalities. They often have uneven eyelids.

Here are some calicos being playful.

Calicos have uneven eyelids, especially when they pose. Try to get your cat's eyelids as even as possible in a pose! It might take tons of tries to get it just right, but it is possible to get them even!

P.F. Magic Description: Catz of the Calico breed are playful, lovable, learn new tricks easily and come quickly when called.

Tips for Breeding Projects

Best variety: the less patches the better! alternatively, some people like patches if they are just the white and black ones. good luck breeding for that though!

Best traits: mostly everything! Calicos have an awesome coat color pattern, which makes for very interesting mixies. Their body shape is also quite nice, and works well as a base for many of the other breeds as well.

Worst traits: patches! They can look good occasionally, but it's hard to do!
